Framewave

A social feed built for photos, video and the people behind them.

Framewave is the project codename for an Instagram-style social media app we built for iOS and Android. Users share photos and videos to a feed, post stories, follow each other, like and comment, chat in direct messages and get push notifications for all of it. One React Native codebase powers both apps, with a backend built for media uploads and feeds.

Client work. Framewave is our project codename. The client's name and the app's real name are kept private at their request.

People expect Instagram. Nothing less.

Anyone opening a new social app compares it, often without meaning to, with the apps already on their phone. Feeds have to load fast, video has to play smoothly, and stories, comments and messages all have to be there.

The client needed that full set of features on iPhone and Android, without paying for two separate apps or launching with half of what users expect.

What happens when someone posts

From the camera roll to their followers' feeds.

  1. 1

    Pick a photo or video

The user chooses a photo or video from their phone and adds a caption.

  2. 2

    Upload

The media is uploaded to the backend and stored, ready to be delivered to followers.

  3. 3

    Into the feeds

The post appears in followers' feeds, or as a story that disappears after 24 hours.

  4. 4

    Followers react

Likes, comments and follows come in, and each one triggers a push notification.

What we built

The features people use every day on Instagram, built into one app.

Photo and video feeds

A scrolling feed of photo and video posts from the people each user follows.

Stories

Short posts that disappear after 24 hours.

Likes, comments and follows

The core social actions, on every post and every profile.

Direct messages

Private one-to-one chat between users.

Push notifications

Alerts for new likes, comments, followers and messages, so people come back.

Backend for media and feeds

Upload, storage and delivery of photos and video, and the services that build each user's feed.

The result

The client has a complete photo and video social network on both iPhone and Android, built from one React Native codebase instead of two separate apps.

Users get the features they already know from Instagram, from feeds and stories to direct messages, and the client owns the whole platform, from the apps to the backend.

Questions about this project

Why is the app called Framewave?

Framewave is our project codename. The client asked us to keep their name and the app's real name private. We are happy to walk you through the work on a call.

Which Instagram features does it include?

Photo and video feeds, stories, likes, comments, follows, direct messages and push notifications, which covers the core of what people use Instagram for every day.

Can you build a social app for our community or brand?

Yes. We start with the features your users need most for launch, agree a written scope and a fixed price, and build the iOS and Android apps and the backend together.

Building a social or community app?

We build feeds, stories, messaging and notifications for iOS and Android from one codebase, with the backend to support them.
